The 2-year Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (IMLEX) will provide a multidisciplinary and innovative programme combining Imaging, Lighting and Information Technology.

The European Commission and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) have announced the results of the first call for proposals for Erasmus Mundus Master Joint Degree Partnerships with Japan. Only three programmes were selected, and a programme in the field of extended reality by the University of Eastern Finland and Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan is among them.

The 2-year Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (IMLEX) will provide a multidisciplinary and innovative programme combining Imaging, Lighting and Information Technology. The objective is to educate students in advanced technologies, methodologies and practical applications with two goals: to improve the career prospects of graduates and to meet the needs of industry and society. Students will develop professional and social skills useful in both European and Japanese cultural context. The topics covered by this program are in line with innovation strategies as put forward by EU’s Industry 4.0 and Japan’s Society 5.0. Extended reality (XR) is redefining the way humans interact with their environment. In the future, industrial environments will contain more robots and complex elements that can be challenging to control. Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality (AR, MR, VR) offer new opportunities for almost any application. In this IMLEX program, students will benefit from both the European research expertise in imaging, rendering and lighting in combination with Japanese research expertise related to XR and robotics. This unique cooperation is supported by a strong industrial involvement from both regions.

IMLEX is a consortium of four universities: University of Eastern Finland (coordinating institution), Toyohashi University of Technology (coordinator in Japan), KU Leuven (Belgium), and Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne (France). Utsunomiya University and Chiba University (both in Japan) are academic associate partners. Several world-leading companies from Europe and Japan, such as nVidia, Process Genius, Schréder, and Itoh Optical Industrial joined as industrial associate partners.
